Let´s go to the Ballada

I´ve been camping at the beach for the past 6 days. We were at a pretty cool beach named Camburi. It is a pretty famous beach, it was rated the best beach in Sao Paulo state and in the top 10 for all of Brasil. When we were going there I had no idea that we were going to a popular beach. I thought that we would be camping on just some ordinary beach, in the middle of nowhere. This goes to show how little I actually know what is happening here. I even took Coke-a-Cola thinking that there would be little access to caffinated drinks there! LOL. We also visited a couple of other beaches Boiçucanga and Maresias which were both very beautiful.

Here is a pic of our group.

From left to right: OJ (Katia´s husband), Katia (Gils sister), Nilva (Gils mom), Carlos (Gils brother), Me, Gil, Dani (Gils gf)

This was taken after dinner at a local restaurant. We all ate dinner for R$170 which is about $75 USD! There are some pretty expensive places but you can eat well for pretty cheap. We were not even trying to cut the cost for this dinner either, probably could have brought it down to about R$130 if we were.

Anyways, here is a couple of decent views of the beach during the day.

Camburi is a beach that is set directly against a set of mountains. I´ve never seen this before so it was pretty cool. There are some pretty significant islands pretty close by as well.

Here are a few pics on the way to the beach.

At night I was mostly hanging out with Carlos, who is a parting maniac. He always to be out until atleast 5 AM. I was able to hang in there with him for a few days but not the entire time.

I had (and still have) a bit of a cold and the sleeping in the camping was terrible so I was not able to get over it. Each night I only got a few hours of decent sleep. We were staying at Camping Camburi, which was on the closest road to the beach. The bathrooms were nasty, but overall it was not too bad. He is the one who coined the term “Lets go to the Ballada”, ballada is party in Portugese. His English was pretty good but still very choppy, he had a bunch of interesting quotes, I wish I remembered them all.

Since the toilets were soo bad at our campsite I was determined to find some better ones. It took some time but I´m convinced that I found the best bathrooms in all of Camburi! They are at a great dessert house Framboesa, here is what the bathroom looks like.

After I found this bathroom we went there every night to take care of business, and to have dessert.

Obviously speedos are very popular here, there were a bunch of people that were not wearing speedos though. So you would not stand out if you were wearing normal surfer style shorts. Some days I wore shorts and others speedos, I didn´t mind wearing speedos. For some stuff speedos is better than shorts, because shorts move when you are in the water where as speedos do not.

Frisco ball

Frisco ball

Frisco (which equals Gay in Portuguese) is a pretty cool game that is popular on the beaches here. It involves 2 or 3 players each who have a paddle and they pass the ball to each other. I am not sure how the winner is determined but the object is to keep the ball in play by not letting it hit the ground or water.

I think she was worried about getting burned on her nose and half of her mouth.

While on the beach there were many vendors selling different items, such as ice cream, coconut juice from the coconut, grilled cheese on a stick, and a bunch of other stuff.

The grilled cheese was pretty good, it would be cool if we had this in Florida. Enough of the avoidance here is the speedo pics!

I am pretty sure that the speedos that I´m wearing here are too big actually. I prefered the smaller black speedos.

From now on I am wearing these types of speedos, I don´t like the gray ones anymore.

One thing that I noticed on the beach in Brasil, drinking is a way of life. Everybody is drinking all the time, which sometimes made me feel kinda funny but it wasn´t a big deal. Different from the US once you told someone that you don´t drink they didn´t try to peer pressure you to drink, they just stopped offering. The people here were very friendly and cool, I met a bunch of nice people. One girl that I met Paula (whos English was very good) who was a friend of Carlos was soo funny. She insisted on calling me by my first name Sayed, which is pronounced sigh-eee-gee in Portugese. I never would have guessed that my first name could possible be pronounced that way!

For New Years we went to Gils cousin´s house and had dinner then went to the beach to party. Here is a couple pics of us.

For New Years the beach was packed withe people, there was a decent fireworks show. It seemed like the parting that night never ended. I think it is still going on right now actually.

Sayed, that was a long blog…looks like you are having a blast down there! I figured out how you win at frisco ball…the first to catch the ball between their buttcheeks is the winner! Vegas was fun, but it seems that you had more fireworks than me on the vegas strip…I’ll tell you later. I think we should start working out in speedo’s at the gym…it will allow us to see more immediate results. The beach and new year’s pics look like fun. Hope you are taking care of business sayed style…I would feel bad again to ring the doorbell of your tent and feel awkward upon your greeting. Sounds like you are the only one on the beach who is sober…haha…that is actually a good thing.
